Role: UX/UI Designer (Web & Mobile)

Timeline: 2024 – 2025

Team: CTO, FE, BE, App Dev, QA

Overview

OMPOS is a SaaS-based POS and business management system designed for restaurants and retail operations.

Target audience

  • Cashiers
  • Restaurant staff
  • Store managers
  • Business owners

Client

Restaurants and retail businesses using OMPOS for daily sales and operations.

The system supports order management, inventory tracking, payments, and real-time operations across web, mobile, and POS devices.

I. Problem

User

  • Creating and modifying orders
  • Managing tables (merge, split, move)
  • Processing payments and refunds
  • Scanning products and printing receipts

Business

  • Inefficient operations during peak hours
  • Increased training time for new staff
  • Higher error rates in orders and transactions

How might we design a POS system that is fast, intuitive, and reliable in real-world, high-pressure environments?

II. Approach

Real-world observation
  • Observed real workflows in restaurants and retail stores
  • Identified bottlenecks in order-taking and payment flows
  • Noted frequent errors caused by unclear UI and complex interactions
Key insight

In POS systems, speed and clarity are more critical than flexibility.

Product strategy
  • Minimize the number of steps for critical actions
  • Design for fast recognition instead of recall
  • Optimize for touch interactions on tablet devices
  • Ensure consistency across different business types

III. Solution

Optimized order & payment flows
  • Reduced steps in order creation and checkout
  • Designed quick actions for: Add/remove items; Apply discounts; Process payments.

👉 Faster transactions with fewer errors

Advanced table management (restaurant use case)
  • Merge tables
  • Split bills
  • Move orders between tables

👉 Reduced complexity in high-volume restaurant environments

Retail POS optimization
  • Integrated barcode scanning for fast product input
  • Simplified inventory and product lookup
  • Designed clear receipt and billing flows

👉 Improved speed and accuracy for retail operations

Hardware-integrated experience
  • Receipt printers
  • Card payment devices (POS terminals)
  • Barcode scanners

👉 Bridged the gap between digital interface and physical operations

Cross-platform system design
  • Tablet POS (primary interaction)
  • Mobile app (monitoring & quick actions)
  • Web dashboard (management & reporting)

👉 Ensured consistent experience across all touchpoints

Continuous testing & iteration
  • Worked closely with developers and QA to test real scenarios
  • Iterated on flows to reduce friction and improve clarity
  • Refined dashboard and data presentation over time

Business impact

Reduced sales operation time

User impact

Staff can operate quickly with minimal training
